and that night four americans lost their lives, including u.s. ambassador chris stevens. tonight, new revelations about the terrorists, the ferocity of their attack and new questions about whether life-saving security was denied. abc's jake tapper has details. >> reporter: that horrifying night in benghazi had former security officials in libya today condemning their superiors for denying their requests for more security agents. >> i asked for 12 agents. his response to that was, "you're asking for the sun, moon and the stars." >> reporter: eric nordstrom, the former security officer at the u.s. embassy in libya, today recalled his biggest frustration as being the state department. >> it's dealing and fighting against the people, programs and personnel who are supposed to be supporting me. for me, the taliban is on the inside of the building. >> reporter: nordstrom suspected the denials for more security were rooted in a fear of making libya seem more unstable. but a state department official denied any politics were at play. >> i have directly served six secretaries of state, democratic and repu

to be a administration cover up in the failures on the deaths of chris stevens and three others. lieutenant colonel andrew wood told cbs news that his request for beefed-up security was rejected by washington. the man in charge of all state department personnel is under patrick kennedy who held the job since 2007. fox news learned that the day after the attack kennedy privately briefed the staffers and told them it appears to be a sophisticated attack. but four days after that briefing, the u.s. ambassador susan rice offered a different narrative. she said rather that we don't see at this point that it was a coordinated premeditated attack. it was three days before any senior u.s. official stated that the benghazi incident was indeed a terrorist attack. >> the americans deserve the truth on what happened. you will find that the bits and pieces are coming out. we are both troubled by what we saw unfold. in the end the truth ought to be done and people ought to be held accountable if bad decisions were mad. >> the u.s. has obtained footage of when the attacks were actually underway. that should shed

as the attack unfolded. as you know, four americans were killed, including ambassador christopher stevens. sharyl attkisson has our story. >> reporter: the e-mails contain the earliest descriptions so far of what happened at benghazi the night of the attack. at 4:05 p.m. eastern time on september 11 an alert from the state department operations center was issued to a number of government and intelligence agencies. including were the white house situation room, the office of the director of national intelligence and the f.b.i. u.s. diplomatic mission in benghazi under attack. approximately 20 armed people fired shots, explosions have been heard as well. ambassador stevens who is currently in benghazi and four chief of mission personnel are in the compound safe haven. at 4:54, less than an hour later, another alert "the firing in benghazi has stopped, a response team is on site attempting to locate chief of mission personnel." then at 6:07, state sent out another alert saying the embassy in tripoli reported the islamic military group ansar al-sharia claims responsibility for benghazi attack

wanted to stay past august and ambassador stevens wanted his team to stay, as well. in the memo, obtained exclusively by abc news, the embassy in libya did not mince words, requesting that the state department keep the 16-member security support team in the country. quite simply, we cannot maintain our existing levels of embassy operations without a continued security support team presence, the memo says. that request, made in february, was granted. after that, security in libya deteriorated further with western target attacks. now the commander of the security team tells me his team wanted to stay past august and that ambassador stevens wanted them there as well. but for some reason, the state department, he says, did not let it happen. wood will testify in front of the oversight committee wednesday. >> we need to operate in a country like libya with -- erring on the side of security. >> reporter: a senior state department official tells abc news that no official request for an extension after august was ever made and there were just as many u.s. shooters present as before. the official

stevens and others were killed. jonathan karl tells us what state department officials are now revealing. >> reporter: this is ahead of a major congressional hearing into what happened on that attack on our consulate in libya. we're hear nug details, details that we have never heard before, about what went down. this is significantly different than what we were told at the time. at the time, as you recall, we were told it was a protest that went bad. and became an attack. now we are told, there was no protest going on outside that embassy. the first indication that they heard anything outside the walls of the embassy of the consulate compound was an explosion and gunfire. they looked through a camera to see what was going on. and we teerld th-- we're told ty saw a large number of armed men coming and approaching the compound. we're told it was a very complex attack. without precedent in u.s. diplomatic history. never seen an attack like this in libya or anywhere else. we were told, by this, this senior state department official. one other fascinating detail is that they still don't know
